Road Closure Updates
Updated: Nov 23
Once the newly poured concrete for the pedestrian crossings passes the required strength tests, the traffic control at 12th & Topeka will be removed and the north/south routes along Topeka Blvd. through the intersection will be fully open. It is likely that this will happen by the end of this week. 12th St. east and west of the intersection will remain closed until signing and pavement markings are installed.
The intersection of 12th & Boswell is now reopened.
Starting the week of November 8, three additional intersections will be closed for waterline improvements. This work will involve a temporary disruption of water service, but closing the three intersections will allow the work to progress as quickly as possible. These intersections are:
12th & Jewell
12th & Mulvane
12th & College
By Friday, November 12, the majority of crosswalk replacement work along 12th St. from Topeka to Kansas and the 12th & Topeka intersection will be completed. However, the 12th & Topeka intersection will remain closed until completion of additional tasks just west of the intersection.
Starting on Tuesday, November 2, the existing traffic control at the intersection of 12th St./Huntoon St./Topeka Blvd. will undergo a number of transitions for 3-4 weeks to allow for the removal and replacement of the existing crosswalks. Boswell Avenue is closed, but expected to reopen before Thanksgiving. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Topeka Blvd. Note: For about two weeks, approximately Nov. 2-16, eastbound Huntoon traffic will not be able to turn right onto southbound Topeka Blvd. due to reconstruction of the crosswalk on the southwest corner of the intersection. Motorists will only be able to turn left onto northbound Topeka from Huntoon during this time period. We ask that everyone think Safety First and use extreme caution while driving through the construction zone. Once all of the crosswalks are replaced, the contractor should be able to open up the intersection to full traffic.
The week of November 29, one lane of 12th St. will be open for thru-traffic the entire length of the project, from S. Kansas Ave. to SW Gage. This one lane of open thru-traffic will remain in effect through Sunday, January 2, 2022, the period known as "Winter Shutdown."
On January 3, 2022, after Winter Shutdown, construction may ramp up fully and require full closure of 12th St. again, depending upon weather conditions.
High Street is closed for the relocation of water utilities.
12th Street is closed at College (west side) and Plass (west side)
On Wednesday, September 15, the intersection of 12th and Boswell will close for utility work. The intersection is expected to be reopened by Thanksgiving.
Wednesday, July 21, 12th Street will close from Lane Street to Western Avenue. This will result in a total closure of 12th Street from Washburn Avenue to Topeka Boulevard and from Topeka Boulevard. to Kansas Avenue. Road crews will be focused on opening up the intersections of Washburn Avenue and Lane Street as soon as possible. Once the likely opening date is confirmed, we will post it on this web site.
In early March, 12th Street fully closed in work areas between Kansas Avenue and Topeka Boulevard and between Topeka Boulevard and Taylor Street. If drivers use 12th Street to commute, they need to find an alternate route like 10th Street or 17th Street. Residents living near any section of 12th Street will also need to find an alternate route to avoid changes in closures. Be observant of changing work zones, especially around water lines relocations, as this work can move quickly.
